Why can't they make more high quality intelligent movies like this? Is it because they are difficult make, or is it because the big profits are in making stupid movies for the drooling imbeciles?

Gary Oldman was phenomenal in this movie! I hope he wins the major awards this year, he deserves them.

Churchill ... starved 4 million to death in India, got 250,000 men butchered at Galipoli, massacred anti-nazi protesters in Greece and insisted Kenya's most fertile land was reserved for whites only. Yes indeed ... an inspiring subject for a movie.

This movie could as easily have been called Cometh the Hour (in fact that might have been more accurate). At one of the most crucial points in History there happened by chance to be this stubborn, pig headed old man in the right place at the right time to save us from a total nightmare. If this fella wasn't around the friggin' Nazis would have taken over the world. Sobering thought.

Darkest Hour is a definite Oscar contender. The sets, the lighting, the sound editing, the acting, all lead to some amazing moments of clarity and presence. Gary Oldman will probably get Best Actor, too.

Beautifully acted film, particularly by Gary Oldman. I was literally moved to tears! We all know the history, but the emotional particulars in this film were touching. I hope he gets that Oscar! 4.5/5*

The Underground scene is one of the best scenes in motion picture history.

It was so-so.. was the subway scene based on reality? It felt like a movie for people who already knew a certain amount about Churchill.. 7/10 - I didn't, but, it did motivate me to find the best Churchill documentary called 'Hitler and Churchill The Eagle and the Lion' on YouTube (I linked part 2 in its comment section), it covers his entire life and WWII - he was ahead of everyone in recognizing the Nazi threat and was a most unique and confounding opponent to Hitler.

Despite some of the negative comments by the ignorant, this film is a perfect and accurate depiction of Winston's fight against not only the nazis but also the undermining cowards in his own party. Oldman deserves the praise heaped on him for the performance (and I see a Knighthood in his future) and the direction was flawless. 2 hours slipped by before I realised it. For me, up there with Their Finest and The King's Speech.

I quite enjoyed this as a Historical drama and Gary Oldman's performance was outstanding. It accurately depicts what an asshole Churchill was and the Conservative government still are. A party for the rich willing to ride to glory as long as it's at the expense of the lives of poor people.

Gary Oldman is a legend and I really liked this movie. Good quality for a TS though it does go out of sync a couple of times.

As the world was in chaos from Evil SS, the weak-kneaded liberals of the world let the WAR grow and grow but the Alpha males and females pushed back the darkness with the light! a lesson that we least not forget as the new SS is spreading Darkness once again!

Let's face it, Darkest Hour was designed, written for and will be Gary Oldman's career swan song. There has been no better picture nor no better character for Oldman to have ever played than perhaps Count Dracula. But even this exceeds all expectation. To say Oldman is a shoe-in for the Best Actor Oscar is an understatement. He owned this role. He owns this Oscar. And I am taking into account Timothée Chalamet eye-opening performance in “Call Me By Your Name” and Daniel Day-Lewis' turn in the Phantom Thread. And I take points away from Day-Lewis because I think the claim that he's retiring after that film is a cheap ploy to garner Academy attention away from Gary Oldman. But... there is a but ... while Darkest Hour is a great film, it is a story in the basic of senses, and itself doesn't deserve a best picture award. That's not to say I didn't enjoy Darkest Hour. But given the subject matter, I found Dunkirk the superior film as a whole. But as a fan of Gary Oldman's, I relished his performance. And as a history buff and a personal admirer of Winston Churchill, I thought his performance was revelatory -- he literally became the Prime Minister. But if there is a sole movie about Churchill that I felt superior, it was 2008's Into The Storm. Gleeson's performance was great, but falls short of Oldman's more nuanced take on Churchill. The story, though, was better edited and more rollicking than Darkest Hour.

Twenty minutes in , and I can already tell this is going into my 'Favorites' ....Oldman is stellar , as per usual....Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.....words to live by.

2/5 Oldman dissolved into the role. Sheer excellence on his part. The underground scene will move most viewers to tears so I suggest finding a clip of that and skipping the film. It lacked so much. No clear emphasis on any character at all nor any strong focus on any particular part of the story. This is a writing failure resulting from indecision on taking a point of view. There is a story to be told but this film didn't tell it.

While Oldman's transformation and acting is mesmerizing, the Movie itself is much to be desired. Nothing new here to move me, let alone call it one of the best films I've scene in the past Year! Good for a one time watch. 7/10
