People have different experiences with this movie and that's all good. But what I can't stand are the people who act like if they like this movie, they are somehow on some higher level of understanding than other people. You can dislike this movie for a number of reasons. People who understood the movie STILL disliked it, so it's supposed "depth" doesn't make it good.

I was so hyped for this film, I really was. Then I saw it in theaters, and I was overwhelmingly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the directing, cinematography, and acting are top notch! The pacing was seamless perfection; it was relentless in its storytelling-- everyone and everything was constantly in motion, or some sort of action was always taking place. The entire movie felt really fluid. It was brilliant. From the very beginning, I had already guessed what the last scene would be, but that didn't help me understand the film as a whole. Come the conclusion, I was so f*cking confused. I couldn't wrap my head around this mind trip (those last 30 minutes will stick with me for a good long time). Let me just say that I think Darren Aronofsky is a master in his field. All of his films impact me deeply, and I consider many to be personal favorites (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, etc.). Here, with 'mother!', though, he took a huge filmmaking risk. After going home from the theater, I was still trying to make sense of the madness I witnessed onscreen. So, I went online and started reading up on it, and lo and behold-- I found what the movie was actually about (and an allegory for), and I came to see just how insanely GENIUS the whole thing is. That was my main complaint upon first viewing: I don't f*cking get it. And that made me kind of loathe it, actually. Admittedly, I missed many of the subtle hints as to what the story was truly about, and I kicked myself quite thoroughly because of it. If you are completely lost with this one, I urge you to read up on the story behind it-- Maybe it'll change your mind as it did my own. This movie is an allegorical masterpiece in arthouse cinema!! Bravo!

masterpiece for sure, I am honored that we still have people like him and Lynch doing real movies and challenging us, this is not for the faint of heart. Its about so many things, but above all its about how horrible human beings are. it taps into allegories and extreme ideas, it is beautiful even when it is super dark and horrifying. it is an experience and it takes mind and soul and courage to watch it. I give it 5 stars, this is what cinema should be, it should make us think and wander and hate and be deeply moved.

I was looking forward to this film and I have never been so let down by a movie in all my life! Garbage movie that falsely depicted itself as a thriller/horror that is actually a ridiculous artsy fartsy bible thumper dump. Don't waste your time with this unless you are one of those idiotic religious nuts!

You can't take away how creative this was, but too confusing for me. I get it's an allegory, but didn't like the story. It gets to be quite boring in the middle and just disturbing by the end. Some will get this, not sure if a lot will like it, but it was interesting to watch to say the least.

My 2 cents tell me that even if you want people to perceive an allegory, you need to know how to tell a story brilliantly. The message is in the undertones but to flow you need an excellent frame. But sadly, this is a pretentious movie that proposes anything but being remotely close to a masterpiece. It is daunting, unhinged ,chaotic and my one sentence review would be a purposelessly artistic drivel that tries to arrogantly achieve cinematic bliss by overreaching and imposing a pretentious as well as preconceived favorable result based on nothing but on an inconsistent eccentricity.

We saw this in the theater last week...Honestly, I hated it, So did my friends. I'm sure the Pro critics on here will say, I just didn't get it. I did, it still sucked lol. People or the Peasants as the movie know it all's, like to call them, were getting up & leaving the theater.

Here's the allegory from the nytimes. If you consider allegory/metaphor a SPOILER, don't read. To me, it's necessary to understand the film. Aronofsky explains his allegorical intentions for Mother! in an interview with Anne Thompson, who gleans that, 'Lawrence is Gaia, or Mother Earth, defending the living, breathing organism she has built into a perfect home.' Thompson continues: 'She can’t handle or fully understand why people are being so disrespectful. Her husband in the film is God, who out of boredom creates Adam (Ed Harris) and Eve (a mischievous Michelle Pfeiffer); they invade her pristine world and the artist’s study (the Garden of Eden), which holds God’s perfect crystal (the apple). Their dueling children are Cain and Abel. And they bring in worshipers who feed God’s need for adulation (in the Old Testament, if don’t pray, you die). The worshipers keep sitting on Mother’s unsupported sink, eventually causing the pipes to burst into the Great Flood. God impregnates Mother, who gives birth to the Messiah, who is followed by an increasingly chaotic communion and Revelations.'

This only further reinforces my belief that this year has been one of the worst movie years in recent memory. I'm sorry, but this was just devoid of any substance. God, Mother Nature, Smurfs, whatever. Just over the top 'Artsy' crap. Horrible audio/video quality at times 0/5*****

omg do not waste your life or time. this is by far the most confusing and mindless piece of nonsense I paid to go see in the theatres... Is 0 a rating?

I understand the point of the film, but it's not as deep as it pretends to be. Weirdness that basically unravels to something pretty gawky. One time watch for me. Little bit pretentious and not in a way I really care about. 3/5

Not Jennifer's best work or even decent, plot is stupid and just overall boring.

I don't usually comment on bad movies but this was terrible! I was disappointed Jennifer Lawrence would participate in trash like this. Hopefully she dumps her agent. Just disappointing all around.

People stay surprised by these movies, but it has been a thing now for a few years, that filmmakers cannot handle any subject matter deeper than comic books and sci-fi. This is just one in a number of films now trying to tackle a topic with such mediocre writing. You only have to look at the trailers now and quickly figure out (at least for most of them) that its either going to be okay, trash, or mindless. It had been at one point every blue moon one of these things would surprise but now if feels like that is not even the case anymore. Maybe it's not the films or filmmakers though. Maybe it's us as film viewers. Maybe we expect too much of fantasy and make belief now, we need too much from our films. We need for them to be realistic, but full of wonderful fantasy, just not too much to take away from the realism, or make it too cheesy, but we still need the cheese though, we just don't want to know its there. We drool over human beings who just happen to be actors but get sick of their faces when we see them all-of-the-time, especially when they are not as good as when they were in the previous film, you know that one that made them a star in our eyes, and made us always claim how lovely they are, and sent them to the Oscars in that designer suit or dress. Maybe, or maybe things just are not what they use to be.

This movie was such crap and got such bad reviews, that jennifer lawrence said she would take a break from making any more movies. Hopefully she stays true to her word. But the word of celebrities arent and never have been worth much to begin with...

Excellent movie, I'm not disappointed. As usual with Aronofsky's movies you watch it first for the experience, just keep an open mind and don't expect every detail explained to you, and if you don't get all the meaning and metaphors just watch it again another time. BTW, decent CAM quality.

I would say someone explain this bulls**t to me. But you know what?.... Nevermind. It was garbage, no matter how you explain it.

I have to say that shoving this film down my throat under the false pretense of a horror film (which it wasn't in the least) annoys me. Were they afraid they couldn't get an audience based on the film's own merits and had to trick a mainstream horror audience in for a viewing? It's a drama with aspects of mystery, not a horror. I didn't feel like they were 'spoon feeding' me the message, it felt like they were force feeding it to me. Also, equating being intelligent with loving this film and its 'message' is like equating eating chocolate with being good at sex. It makes no sense. After watching it, I just wanted to shout, 'I get it. I get it, already!' It tried my patience and it was a very poorly planned idea to market it as a horror. Big mistake there and in the casting decisions; Jennifer Lawrence was wrong and it tipped the acting from there. Thanks for the upload.
